The 360º videos production

 

Having all the information needed, we are now ready to record our videos.

​

Our prior experience with a 360º camera was non-existent. Therefore, we worked in a pair in order to help each other understand the functioning of the device. Moreover, precisely because we did not have any previous contact with this technology, our productions are quite simple, but we learnt a lot.

​

Checklist

​

We recommend that you go through ViRAL’s quest “Exploring a local Community - Making Heritage trails with 360º videos” before initiating your work.

 

Afterwards, verify that you have everything you need to film.

 

Here is the list of everything we used to create our videos:

  • 360º camera. Ours is Mi Sphere Camera Kit which is quite affordable and easy to use for this kind of basic productions;

  • Android Smartphone, NOT Apple: We need to install an app for the camera to function, the Mi Sphere Cam app. Apple does not have it in its iOS store;

  • A micro-SD card with 32GB of memory at the very least AND U3 velocity. Inferior velocity will NOT work (we actually had to buy a second SD card precisely because the first one did not have the latter property);

  • A tripod of a regular camera. Our main idea in using such was to attempt to take 360º pictures without none of us standing in the way. Unfortunately, the regular tripod is still visible in the videos and pictures.

Our experience

​

The camera connects to the phone via wireless, so you need to have it on. After that, the app is fairly intuitive. We decided that 360º photos were really good in open spaces such as these and tried to do some basic videos to show particular details. As we were two, it is virtually impossible for us to avoid filming the second person but this can be easily done by one person only.

Editing the videos

​

Editing 360º videos and photographs is difficult. There are some apps that might help you if you are comfortable with their use; however, we do recommend trying and get the best shot you can, simple and clean. If you do this, you will not need to do any editing work.

 

Should you really need/want to edit your productions, you may use Adobe Photoshop, Pinnacle or Spark.

Uploading the videos

​

Go to the Mi Sphere Cam app on your phone, select the video and click on the “share” icon (top right corner). The app will prepare your video (stitching). Select “Done” at the end of the process.

​

Afterwards, upload the files on your laptop (may use a USB cable or other apps that will enable you have your files in both devices, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or any other with similar functionalities).

​

Should you wish to upload your videos to YouTube, you will need to use Adobe Premiere to do so (this is not a free app). In case you have the programme installed on your computer, all you need to do is to follow this step-by-step list:

​

  1. Open Adobe Premiere

  2. Select “New Project”, name it and select “OK”

  3. Go to “File” > “Import” and select your video

  4. Select the clip, go to “Clip” > “Modify” > “Interpret Footage”

  5. Change frame rate to 29fps

  6. Scroll down to VR properties. In “Conform to”, select “Equirectangular” and the following settings: Monoscopic, horizontal 360º, vertical 180º

  7. Double-click on the video to preview

  8. Right-click on the preview and select “VR Video” > “Enable”

  9. To export the video, add it to the timeline and select it. Go to “File” > “Export” > “Media” and verify that the “VR Video” checkbox is selected

To upload the video on YouTube, go to “Your Videos” and a new page will open. On the top right corner, there will be a “Create” box, which you should click on, and select the upload option. Select the files you wish to upload, i.e., the videos that you have exported from Adobe Premiere, add a title, a description, and go through the remaining options, tailoring the video to your needs.

Once the video is up and running, you can try it yourself! If you wish to loop the video, right-click on it and select “Loop”. The video will loop until you turn off the feature (by right-clicking it and selecting “Loop” again).

After doing such, your work is done!

A produção de vídeos 360º

 

Tendo toda a informação que precisamos, estamos prontos para gravar os nossos vídeos.

​

Não tínhamos qualquer experiência prévia com uma câmara 360º. Assim, tínhamos uma equipa de duas pessoas para nos ajudarmos mutuamente a compreender o funcionamento do equipamento. Para além disso, precisamente porque nunca tínhamos tido contacto com esta tipo de tecnologia, as nossas produções são bastante simples, mas aprendemos muito.

Checklist

​

Recomendamos que explorem o quest “Exploring a local Community – Making Heritage trails with 360º videos” (disponível em inglês) antes de iniciarem o trabalho. Depois, verifiquem que têm tudo o que necessitam para filmar.

​

Esta é a lista de tudo o que utilizámos na criação dos nossos vídeos:

  • Uma câmara 360º. A nossa é a Mi Sphere Camera Kit, que é bastante acessível em termos de preço e de fácil utilização para este tipo de produções simples;

  • Um smartphone Android, NÃO Apple: precisámos de instalar uma app para que a câmara funcionasse, a Mi Sphere Cam. A Apple não a tem na sua loja iOS;

  • Um cartão micro-SD com 32Gb de memória no mínimo E velocidade U3. Cartões com velocidade inferior NÃO funcionarão (na verdade, nós tivemos que comprar um segundo cartão SD precisamente porque o primeiro não tinha última característica);

  • Um tripé de uma câmara normal. A nossa ideia principal ao recorrer ao tripé era tentar tirar fotografias 360º sem que nenhum de nós surgisse na mesma. Infelizmente, o tripé normal continua visível nos vídeos e fotografias.

A nossa experiência ​

​

A câmara liga-se ao telemóvel através do wireless, por isso precisam que o ter ligado. Depois, a aplicação é relativamente intuitiva. Concluímos, que as fotografias 360º são boas para espaços abertos como estes e tentámos filmar alguns vídeos para mostrar detalhes. Sendo uma equipa de duas pessoas, é virtualmente impossível evitar filmar a segunda. Apercebemo-nos que a filmagem pode ser feita facilmente de forma individual.

Editar os vídeos

​

Editar vídeos e fotografias 360º é difícil. Existem algumas aplicações que poderão ajudar-vos se se sentirem confortáveis com as mesmas. Contudo, recomendamos vivamente que deem o vosso melhor nas gravações para obterem um vídeo simples e sem ruído visual. Assim, não haverá necessidade de realizar nenhum trabalho de edição.

Se precisarem/quiserem mesmo editar as vossas produções, poderão usar Adobe Photoshop, Pinnacle ou Spark.

​

Fazer o upload dos vídeos

​

Na aplicação Mi Sphere Cam, selecionem o vídeo e cliquem no ícone de partilha no canto superior direito. O vídeo vai começar a ser preparado para partilha (stitching). Selecionem “Done” no fim do processo.

​

Façam o upload dos vídeos para o vosso computador (podem utilizar um cabo USB ou outras aplicações que irão permitir ter os ficheiros em ambos os dispositivos, como Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive ou outras com funcionalidades semelhantes).

​

Se quiserem fazer o upload dos vídeos para o YouTube, terão que usar o Adobe Premiere (esta aplicação não é grátis). Se tiverem o programa instalado no vosso computador, só precisam de seguir estes passos:

​

  1. Abram o Adobe Premiere

  2. Selecionem “New Project”, deem-lhe um título e selecionem “OK”

  3. Vão a “File” > “Import” e selecionem o vosso video

  4. Selecionem o clip, vão a “Clip” > “Modify” > “Interpret Footage”

  5. Alterem a frame rate para 29fps

  6. Desçam até encontrarem as “VR properties”. Em “Conform to”, selecionem “Equirectangular” e as seguintes características: “Monoscopic”, horizontal 360º, vertical 180º

  7. Duplo-clique no vídeo para obter a preview

  8. Clique com o botão direito do rato na preview e selecionem “VR Video” > “Enable”

  9. Para exportar o video, adicionem-o à timeline e selecionem-o. Vão a “File” > “Export” > “Media” e verifiquem que a caixa “VR Video” está selecionada.

Para fazer o upload no YouTube, vão a “Os seus vídeos” e abrir-se-á uma nova página. No canto superior direito, cliquem em “Criar” e selecionem a opção de upload. Selecionem o ficheiro que querem colocar no vosso canal, ou seja, o ficheiro exportado do Adobe Premiere, adicionem o título, uma descrição e percorram as outras opções, adaptando o vídeo às vossas necessidades.

​

Assim que o vídeo estiver pronto, podem tentar o 360º por vocês mesmos! Se quiserem colocar o vídeo em loop, cliquem com o botão direito do rato em cima do vídeo e selecionem “Loop”. Este irá repetir-se até que desativem essa funcionalidade (clicando, novamente, com o botão direito do rato selecionando “Loop”).

Depois disso, o vosso trabalho está feito!
